Turtle Mosaic

Welcome to the July 2012 Carnival of Natural Parenting: Family Creations

While building my pinterest board for Aodhan’s 3rd birthday, I came across this little blog post from Oopsy Daisy that features a craft by Melanie Mikecz (who I already loved after ordering four copies of this fab journal, which she illustrated), and I thought it would be a great little collective craft that the kids could do during the party. We didn’t end up needing a craft (with all the furry and turtley friends running around it was a bit unnecessary), but I decided to find time around Aodhan’s birthday to do it as a family craft.

I modified the instructions a little bit, to make it more preschool friendly.

I cut a bunch of tissue paper strips and handed them over to Aodhan for snipping (we were going for squares and mostly got them).

While he cut the paper, I traced an outline of a turtle on a scrap piece of paper and got the approval of both A and his daddy-o  before adding it to our canvas (I usually use dollar store canvasses for our art projects, but because I saw the potential for ALOT of glue, I actually went with an artist quality canvas for this one). Using the outline as a guide, we added white glue followed by the cut tissue paper squares. We all loved it!

I wanted to use shredded newsprint to create a ground for our turtle to walk on, but Kevin suggested that we use sand (which we already had on hand from the aforementioned birthday party). Aodhan and Kevin took over at this point, adding glue followed by a generous layer of coloured sand.

I was uber-pleased with this creation and have added it to the ‘to-be-hung’ pile. I can see families with younger kiddos being able to manage this craft. If you have toddlers they could easily handle the cutting of the paper (though I wouldn’t use tissue paper as it can be a bit difficult to cut unless you are using super sharp adult scissors) and/or the gluing. For a younger babe, this would be a great introduction to glue and textures. Parents could provide a 12 month old with some tissue paper to pull apart and some sand to explore while mama and papa got to work on making the turtle – which would be a great addition to any child’s bedroom!
